The Cottagers, Incorporated
House Tour Fundraiser
July 14, 2011 10am to 3pm

The Cottagers, Incorporated is a philanthropic organization of African American women homeowners on Martha’s Vineyard founded in the mid 1950s whose mission is to promote education, a sense of cultural pride and the value of service to the island community.  Five fundraisers are held in the summer to support island charities and two annual scholarships which are awarded to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduating seniors.  The women of the Cottagers, Incorporated are important role models, epitomizing the strength of women through quiet activism.  The Cottagers, Inc. clubhouse, Cottagers Corner, was dedicated on July 5, 2006 as the eighteenth site on the African American Heritage Trail in Oak Bluffs and is an important site, honoring the historical building, the membership’s commitment to meeting island needs, and the significant role that they have played in the community for over fifty years.  The building has been used for a variety of purposes over the years, including the After School Program, teen activities, and art classes, that are well-known to most Islanders.
